In order to help professionals in construction and real estate related businesses keep up to date with changes in their markets in some detail, NPA Data Services is offering data from its database of 19 basic building permit indicators for counties, states, and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). We have organized the much too detailed Census permit data-annually for 1980-2002 and year-to-date at annual rate beginning in 1996-into a more manageable collection of data series and made them comparable over time. Thus, we aggregated the data reported for 19,000 places into counties and the data for 114 detailed permit items into 19 major building permit categories. Census reports for MSAs are not comparable from year to year because they reflect different definitions of MSAs in force during each year. We have aggregated the county data into consistent MSAs currently in force. We have also converted the permit valuation amounts into constant 1996 dollars. To our knowledge, this information does not exist elsewhere. The
county permit data complements our economic and demographic projections
and our metropolitan area construction and economic forecasts rather well.
These data bring out the differences in construction trends among the different
metropolitan areas. They also identify contributions of individual counties
to the MSA trends.
The Building Permits Service also includes Quarterly Reports of Hightlights of MSA New Housing Trends. Note: Beginning January 1996, the Bureau of the Census discontinued reporting of residential demolition and additions and alterations permits and of all nonresidential permits. It is possible that these reports will be resumed. For the next 18 months, we will continue to report available data for the discontinued series as reported through 1995. For the future, we are expanding reports for new residential construction by offering in this service, in addition to the annual data, 3-, 6-, and 9-month year-to-date annual rates update reports issued during the year. We will seek alternative information for nonresidential construction if the discontinued reporting is not resumed by the Census Bureau.
